Jonathan Christie

Having studied a degree in Sociology at Portsmouth University I went on to complete a postgraduate qualification in Careers and Vocational Guidance at Reading University and began my professional career with Hampshire Guidance and Careers Service, working in a range of inner city schools in Portsmouth.

After five years of working in secondary schools I developed a keen interest in researching long distance mountain routes in the Himalayas and took a career break to travel around India and Nepal with the aim of retracing the steps of the 1951 expedition to Everest base camp. After three separate month-long treks I returned to the UK to work once again in careers guidance but this time with unemployed 16 to 19-year olds in Southampton, the New Forrest and the Isle of Wight.

During the four years I worked with this challenging but rewarding group of young people, I successfully introduced adventurous activities into the programme and regularly took groups sailing on the Solent and Climbing at Calshot activity centre.  This encouraged each individuals to take control of their destiny and overcome say to day problems.

Moving to Cornwall in 2002 I took up a new role setting up a Careers and Employability Service for Falmouth University and the University of Exeter. Throughout numerous restructures my role has developed and grown within the University.

I have two children who both attend Marlborough School in years 2 and 6 and I have been an active parent throughout this time in the Marlborough Mariners.
