y4 Tern Class

Autumn - The Danger Zone

In learning about the different climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts of the Earth pupils in class 4 focus on two contrasting locations: Rainforest and Desert.  They learn about life in these regions today and how they have both affected and been affected by people in the past.  Both the Mayan and Sumerian civilizations developed and then declined in distinct environments – we see if there are lessons to learn from them about living sustainable lives.

Spring - Ancient Quest

Spring term marks the Chinese new year and is a great opportunity to find out about a very different culture.  Having been introduced to the Mandarin language and learning something of modern day Chinese culture and geography, y4 pupils make further sense of this vast country with an exploration of the first Emperors of the Shang Dynasty and the bronze-age in Ancient China during the second millennium BCE.

Summer - Foul Play on the Fal

The river Fal and its arrival at the sea forms the focus of class 4’s summer term ‘Ocean’ topic.  Pupils may learn about the formation of the ria (drowned river valley) and creeks as well as other geographical features.  The value of the estuary as a natural harbour is explored through the development of the port, and the coastal defences of Pendennis and St Mawes castles.  We also look at the development of lighthouses and other marine safety measures.
