Maths Learning

Mathematics at Marlborough School
Our Curriculum Approach
At Marlborough School, we follow a mastery approach to mathematics, designed to ensure that every child achieves success. Learning is carefully sequenced in small steps, allowing all children to build deep understanding and make meaningful connections in their maths learning.
Our aim is to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who enjoy the subject and can apply their knowledge fluently and flexibly. We focus on three key strands: fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, helping children to know more, remember more, and do more with their mathematical knowledge.
Our curriculum is based on the NCETM Curriculum Pathway, supported by resources from Oak National Academy. This ensures a carefully structured progression from Reception through to Year 6, with learning revisited and built upon year by year. Children are encouraged to use concrete resources, visual models, and precise mathematical language to deepen their understanding.
Teaching for Mastery
Lessons are built around the NCETM’s Five Big Ideas for teaching mathematics:
  • Coherence
  • Representation and Structure
  • Mathematical Thinking
  • Fluency
  • Variation
Teachers use these principles to design clear, connected lessons that expose mathematical structure and encourage children to explain their thinking. New concepts are introduced in small steps, with opportunities for discussion, practice, and reflection.
We value mistakes as part of the learning journey, using them to unpick misconceptions and strengthen understanding. High expectations are set for all learners, including pupils with SEND, as we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics with the right support and challenge.
Early Mathematics
In Reception, we focus on building strong foundations in number, pattern, and problem-solving. We use the objectives frm NCETM Mastering Number programme, which helps children develop number sense, confidence, and flexibility. Maths is taught daily through whole-class teaching, small group work, and continuous provision activities, where children apply their learning in different contexts.
Mastering Number Across the School
All children from Reception to Year 6 take part in short, focused Mastering Number sessions four times a week. These 10–15 minute lessons are designed to strengthen number fluency and help children notice and explore mathematical patterns and connections.
Assessment and Progression
Assessment is built into every stage of our curriculum. At the end of the unit, a post-assessment helps teachers and pupils reflect on progress and plan next steps. This is reviewed the following year by the next class teacher, to help identify areas of support.
Throughout the year, children are also assessed against the Maths Guidance: key stages 1 and 2, ensuring that they are on track and secure in the essential knowledge for their year group. Where gaps are identified, timely interventions are planned to ensure that children are 'lesson ready' for new content.
